The food value of starch rich flagellates for Pecten maximus (Linné) larvae. Preliminary results ArchiMer
Robert, Rene; Moal, Jeanne; Campillo, Maria-josé; Daniel, Jean-yves.
Pecten maximus larvae exhibit amylase as a main digestive enzyme indicating the possibility of starch hydrolysis. The food value of Rhodomonas salina and Porphyridium cruentum, both rich in starch, on the development of Pecten maximus larvae was investigated. The larval development was studied by means of an image analysis technique and epifluorescence microscopy was used for detecting ingestion and digestion of each phytoplankton species. The biochemical contents of algae and larvae were also assessed. The best growth of Pecten maximus larvae was observed when fed with the mixture PTS (plurispecific control). No growth was observed for larvae fed with Porphyridium cruentum of which most of the population died on day 16 (90%). This algal species was...

The occurrence of Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti (Linnaeus) and Aedes (Stegomyia) albopictus (Skuse) in a rural area in Northern Paraná, Brazil and the associated Culicidae fauna Zoologia
Lopes,José.
To verify the possible occurrence of Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus, 1761) and Aedes albopictus (Skuse, 1894) in a rural area in Northern Paraná, Brazil, a water tank was installedon a farm, to work as an artificial breeding site. Collections were carried out every 15 days, during a period of 2 years. 12,876 Culicidae larvae, belonging to 10 different species, including Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, were collected, indicating their occurrence.

Thermal tolerance of the zoea I stage of four Neotropical crab species (Crustacea: Decapoda) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Rebolledo,Adriana P.; Collin,Rachel.
ABSTRACT Although larval stages are often considered particularly vulnerable to stressors, for many marine invertebrates studies of thermal tolerance have focused on adults. Here we determined the upper thermal limit (LT50) of the zoea I of four Caribbean crab species (Macrocoeloma trispinosum, Aratus pisonii, Armases ricordi, and Minuca rapax) and compared their thermal tolerance over time and among species. The zoea from the subtidal species M. trispinosum and tree climbing mangrove species A. pisonii had a lower thermal tolerance, 35 and 38.5 °C respectively, than did the semiterrestrial A. ricordi and M. rapax. In all four species tested, the estimates of thermal tolerance depend on the duration of exposure to elevated temperatures. Longer exposures to...

Thyroid gland development in Rachycentron canadum during early life stages Anais da ABC (AABC)
OTERO,ADRIANA P.S.; RODRIGUES,RICARDO V.; SAMPAIO,LUÍS A.; ROMANO,LUIS A.; TESSER,MARCELO B..
The aim of this study was to describe the ontogeny of thyroid follicles in cobia Rachycentron canadum. Larvae were sampled daily (n=15 - 20) from hatching until 15 dah (days after hatching). Following, larvae were sampled every two days by 28 dah; a new sample was taken at 53 dah. The samples were dehydrated, embedded in Paraplast, and sections of 3 µm were dewaxed, rehydrated and stained with HE and PAS. A single follicle was already present 1 dah and three follicles were found 8 dah. The number of follicles increased up to 19 on 53 dah. The diameter of follicles and follicular cell height were lower 1 dah (6.83 ± 1.00 and 4.6 ± 0.01 µm), but increased from 8 dah (24.03 ± 0.46 µm e 6.43 ± 0.46 µm). From 8 dah, the presence of reabsorption vesicles was...

Trichoptera Kirby (Insecta) immature fauna from Rio das Almas Basin and Rio Paranã, Goiás State, Brazil, with new records for some genera Biota Neotropica
Barbosa,Felipe Francisco; Godoy,Bruno Spacek; Oliveira,Leandro Gonçalves.
This paper deals with the Trichoptera immature fauna collected in 101 streams in Rio das Almas Basin during August-October 2008 and in Rio Paranã, Iaciara-GO municipality, on August 2003, using kick-nets with 0.025 m² of opening and 2 mm mesh. We record four new genera for Goiás State, expanding records of genera from 33 to 37 and contributing to the Trichoptera fauna knowledge in Central Brazil.

Variability in the onset of hatching of Maja brachydactyla Balss, 1922 (Brachyura: Majidae) in the English Channel in relation to sea temperature ArchiMer
Martin, Jocelyne; Planque, Benjamin.
Long-term monitoring of zooplankton and temperature has been carried out at the nuclear power station of Flamanville (west coast of Cotentin, English Channel, France) since 1977. Zooplankton sampling and temperature measurements took place at fortnightly intervals, particularly during the spring and summer. In addition, daily records of water temperature were recorded since 1986. The seasonal appearance of Maja brachydactyla Balss, 1922 first stage zoeae in the plankton outside the thermal plume near to the power station can greatly vary from year-to-year. Earliest observations have occurred in early June whilst latest observations were made at the end of July. During the period of study, temperature records display a warming trend whilst hatching is...

Variation and life strategies of the Trichoptera (Insecta) larvae community in a first order tributary of the Paquequer River, Southeastern Brazil BJB
HUAMANTINCO,A. A.; NESSIMIAN,J. L..
The Trichoptera fauna was sampled in a first order tributary of Paquequer River, in the district of Teresópolis, Rio de Janeiro State. Quantitative samples of litter from pools, litter from riffles, sand, and stones were taken on each season from February 1991 to February 1992.The life cycles of common genera were categorized into three groups of biological strategies. The largest group represented the general profile of the community, in which ultimate instar larvae were predominant in spring and the younger ones in summer. Probably, emergence and oviposition occur in spring.
